We are excited continue working with our STEAM provider- Koko NYC! KoKo facilitates process-based, not product-based, workshops. Children in their workshops learn by experimenting rather than following instructions to make a pre-designed product. Koko’s teaching artists encourage children to think creatively to accomplish their goals and support children as they build the confidence to take risks, think big, and learn from failure.

“Trash is treasure.” That is one core value of Koko where they believe that environmental sustainability is a key focus of KoKo workshops and we use recycled or repurposed materials as building supplies to teach environmental awareness, as well as innovation. Children in their workshops learn to create using whatever they have available in their environment and see “trash” as an opportunity to create something new.

The curriculum will be divided into two semesters: the first semester will feature the course Toy Making, while the second semester will focus on the course Inventors Lab 1 (Simple Machines). Details of each workshop can be viewed here. Unlike previous STEAM courses, students will have the opportunity to take home their unique inventions after each class.
